Beware of Bogus Callers

More and more we are hearing of Bogus Callers and other ‘scams’ perpetrated by heartless thieves who prey on vulnerable people and sadly this is becoming more apparent within the Mobility Industry itself. Several newspapers and online magazines have recently featured articles on the subject, with the Derbyshire Times reporting bogus callers posing as Mobility professionals and Mobility & Access Professional Magazine publishing articles on the rise of cold callers posing as Mobility Companies. With crimes like this on the rise, Eden Mobility has decided to put an article together and advise customers old and new of the precautions they can take if they suspect a bogus caller, either on the doorstep or on the telephone.

On your doorstep

More and more we are hearing reports of doorstep scammers posing as Mobility Professionals in order to scam people out of money or gain access to their homes. At Eden Mobility we always recommend that our customers be vigilant when answering the door.
One of the best things you can do at home is to follow the ‘Lock, Stop, Chain & Check Method’. This recommended by the police and other local authorities, and can be easily described in the bullet points below:

  1. Lock …all doors, even when you are at home
  2. Stop …Before you open the door, ask them who they are
  3. Chain …always use a door chain or spy hole
  4. Check …Not sure who they are? Don’t open the door!

All of Eden Mobility’s Engineers and Field Sales staff carry ID badges and will be wearing an Eden Mobility Uniform – though if you are unsure, check. Call our Head Office and we will verify that your visitor is an employee of Eden Mobility Ltd. Our Staff members are all happy to wait outside while you check that their ID is authentic.

On the phone

With the recent rise of cold callers posing as mobility companies, it is important to be aware of phone scams and what you can do to protect yourself. Most important of all is to never reveal your personal details. Never give out financial information such as your bank account details or PIN number, and be wary of anyone asking for personal information such as your passport details.

If you don’t believe the call is genuine, tell them that you will call the company they claim to be from. Make sure you find the correct telephone number for the company from the phone book, their official website or from a letter/statement – never use the number provided by the caller.

It is also worth noting that, if you feel harassed or intimidated, don’t be afraid to hang up the call. You may feel that it is rude to hang up on someone but you have the right not to be harassed or be pressurised into buying something.

At Eden Mobility we never cold call our customers and will always call the day before we attend an appointment at your home so you will be expecting us. If you receive a visit or a phone call out of the blue from someone claiming to be from Eden Mobility, don’t be afraid to follow the steps above and check who they are. Our staff won’t be offended and it is always better to be safe than to be sorry!
